Leipzig are currently seven points behind leaders Bayern Munich and the visit of Gladbach gives them an opportunity to cement their place in UEFA Champions League qualifying while putting pressure on the three teams above them. Despite their high position in the table, they have kept just two clean sheets in their last 10 games in all competitions, a run key defender Gvardiol will be keen to improve. The Croatian has been one of his team’s best players this season and flanked by Willi Orban there is no reason why their defensive record shouldn’t improve in the near future. On the other hand, Marco Rose will have to do without Nkunku, who suffered a thigh injury in the first five Bundesliga games of 2023 in the 2-1 win against Borussia Dortmund after an injury in the international match before the FIFA World Cup last time out and is expected to play for a missing a few weeks. He will be on the sidelines alongside Abdou Diallo, Peter Gulacsi and now Xaver Schlager, although Dani Olmo could be back to counter those defeats while Rose prepare to host his former club.
Their opponents, on the other hand, risk not playing anything this season unless they improve their form quickly. Not in European competition and already eliminated from the DFB-Pokal, a win in eight games – although that win came against Bayern on Matchday 21 – has left Gladbach 11 points clear of the relegation zones and nine adrift of the top six. Therefore, they could use a positive result at the Red Bull Arena to revive their campaign. Daniel Farke will be without several key players this weekend, including Ramy Bensebaini and loanee midfielder Julian Weigl, while first-choice goalkeeper Jonas Omlin is in doubt as he continues his recovery from a hamstring problem. Despite those players on the touchline, Farke still has Jonas Hofmann, Alassane Plea and Marcus Thuram to call on when trying to inspire his side to an unexpected triumph. If they put on a performance similar to that of defeating the reigning Bundesliga champions, they’ll have every chance of prevailing – after all, they sauntered to a 3-0 win when these sides last met in September.
