Reinvent search with a new AI-powered Microsoft Bing and Edge, your co-pilot for the web

Today, to empower people to unleash the joy of discovery, feel the wonder of creation, and make better use of the world’s knowledge, we’re improving how the world benefits from the web by reinventing the tools billions of people use every day , the search engine and the browsers.
Today we’re introducing an all-new AI-powered Bing search engine and Edge browser, now in preview on Bing.com, to provide better search, more complete answers, a new chat experience and the ability to generate content. We consider these tools to be AI co-pilots for the web.
“AI will fundamentally transform every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search,” said Satya Nadella, Microsoft chairman and CEO. “Today we’re launching Bing and Edge powered by AI Copilot and Chat to help people do more with search and the web.”
There are 10 billion searches a day, but we estimate that half of them go unanswered. That’s because people are using search to do things they weren’t originally designed to do. It’s great for finding a website, but too often falls short when it comes to more complex questions or tasks.
The new Bing and Edge – your copilot for the web
We’ve combined search, browsing and chat into a unified experience that you can access from anywhere on the web, and we offer:
- Search better. The new Bing gives you an improved version of the familiar search experience, delivering more relevant results for simple things like sports scores, stock prices and weather, and a new sidebar that shows more comprehensive answers when you want them.
- Full Answers. Bing examines results from across the web to find and summarize the answer you’re looking for. For example, you can get detailed instructions on how to replace eggs with a different ingredient in a cake you’re baking without scrolling through multiple results.
- A new chat experience. For more complex searches – such as planning a detailed itinerary or looking for a TV – the new Bing offers a new, interactive chat. The chat experience allows you to refine your search until you get the complete answer you’re looking for by asking for more details, clarity and ideas – with links available so you can act on your decisions immediately.
- A creative spark. Sometimes you need more than an answer – you need inspiration. The new Bing can generate the content to help you. It can help you write an email, create a 5-day itinerary for a dream Hawaii vacation, with links to book your travel and lodging, prepare for a job interview, or create a quiz for a trivia night. The new Bing also cites all of its sources, so you can see links to the web content it links to.
- New Microsoft Edge experience. We’ve updated the Edge browser with new AI features and a new look, and added two new features: chatting and composing. With the Edge Sidebar, you can request a summary of a lengthy financial report to get key insights—then use the chat feature to request a comparison to a competitor’s financials and automatically populate them in a spreadsheet. You can also ask Edge to help you compose content like a LinkedIn post by giving it a few prompts to get you started. After that, you can ask him to help you update the tone, format, and length of the post. Edge understands the webpage you’re on and adapts accordingly.
With the new Bing, exploring the web is not only easier, it’s also more fun. Ask things like:
My anniversary is coming up in September, help me plan a trip to a fun place in Europe. Departure from London.
Will the Ikea Klippan Loveseat fit in my 2019 Honda Odyssey?
I like electronic music and I want to go to my first festival this year. Do you have any recommendations or tips for me?
Reinvent search with AI
The new Bing experience is the result of four technical breakthroughs:
- Next generation OpenAI model. We’re happy to announce that the new Bing runs on a new next-generation OpenAI major language model that is more powerful than ChatGPT and specially customized for search. It leverages key learnings and advances from ChatGPT and GPT-3.5 – and it’s even faster, more accurate, and more powerful.
- Microsoft Prometheus model. We have developed a proprietary way of working with the OpenAI model that allows us to make the most of its power. We call this collection of skills and techniques the Prometheus Model. This combination delivers more relevant, faster, and more targeted results with improved security.
- Application of AI to the core search algorithm. We’ve also applied the AI model to our core Bing search ranking engine, resulting in the biggest jump in relevancy in two decades. With this AI model, even simple searches are more accurate and relevant.
- New user experience. We’re rethinking how you interact with search, browser and chat by merging them into a unified experience. This will open up a whole new way of interacting with the web.
These groundbreaking new search experiences are possible because Microsoft is committed to making Azure an AI supercomputer for the world, and OpenAI has used that infrastructure to train the groundbreaking models that are now being optimized for Bing.
Microsoft and OpenAI – innovative and responsible together
Along with OpenAI, we have also intentionally implemented safeguards to protect against malicious content. Our teams work to address issues such as misinformation and disinformation, content blocking, data security and preventing the promotion of harmful or discriminatory content in line with our AI principles.
The work we do with OpenAI builds on our company’s years of efforts to ensure our AI systems are inherently responsible. We will continue to use the full power of our responsible AI ecosystem – including researchers, engineers and policy experts – to develop new approaches to risk mitigation.
Live today in limited preview, soon to be expanded to millions
The new Bing is available in limited preview on desktop starting today, and anyone can visit Bing.com today to try sample queries and sign up for the waitlist. We will expand the preview to millions in the coming weeks. A mobile experience will also be in preview soon.
We look forward to bringing the new Bing and Edge to the real world to get the critical feedback needed to improve our models at scale.
