shares of AbbVie underperformed the Zacks large-cap pharma industry over the past year (-1.6% vs. +3.3%). The company is concerned about long-term sales growth as Humira generics enter the US market. Increasing competition from newer therapies is impacting Imbruvica’s sales.

The slowdown in consumer demand due to economic pressures is hurting sales of the aesthetics franchise. However, while sales are expected to decline in 2023, AbbVie expects them to return to robust sales growth in 2025.

However, AbbVie has several new drugs in its portfolio that have the potential to boost sales to make up for lost Humira revenue. Skyrizi and Rinvoq have established excellent go-to-market trajectories, supported by approvals in new indications. It has several early/mid-stage candidates that have blockbuster potential.

shares of NextEra Energy are down -7.9% over the past year versus a -9.2% decline in the Zacks Utility – Electric Power industry. The nature of the Company’s business is subject to complex federal, state and other regulations. Risks in the operation of nuclear power plants, unfavorable weather conditions and rising supply costs weigh on the result.

Nonetheless, NextEra Energy continues to grow its business through the efficient execution of organic projects and strategic acquisitions. The company currently has many renewable projects on the backlog and their completion will result in reduced emissions.

Gulf Power and FPL merger strengthens NextEra’s position in Florida. FPL’s client base is growing as Florida’s economy improves and demand for its services continues to increase. NextEra has ample liquidity to meet its near-term debt obligations, and efficient debt management is providing a tailwind.

shares of ConocoPhillips are up +7.9% over the past year versus +10.4% for the Zacks Oil and Gas – Integrated – United States industry. The Company owns a majority of the acres in the Eagle Ford Shale, Permian Basin and Bakken Shale unconventional deposits. Significant opportunities exist for the Company in the Bakken Shale, where it has approximately 750 undrilled locations that could provide access to vast reserves.

ConocoPhillips forecasts its production in 2023 at 1.76-1.8 MMBoe/d, indicating an increase from 1.74 MMBoe/d last year. COP’s balance sheet is significantly less leveraged than the industry to which it belongs. The company also announced its planned $11 billion return of capital to shareholders in 2023.

However, ConocoPhillips is highly exposed to oil price fluctuations, making things challenging for the company. Also, the company has delivered a lower dividend yield than the industry in recent years. As such, the stock warrants a cautious stance.
