PepsiCo Equities have significantly outperformed Coca-Cola and the S&P 500 index (+8.9% for PEP versus +1.9% for KO and -5.9% for the S&P 500 index) over the past year. The company’s sales and earnings beat Zacks’ consensus estimate and improved year over year for the most recent reporting quarter on Feb. 9. This marked the 17th consecutive quarter of sales.

Resilience and strength of global beverage and convenience food companies bode well. PepsiCo expects to capitalize on this by offering convenience, variety and a value proposition to customers through its brands. It raised its revenue forecast for 2022.

However, PepsiCo experienced margin pressures in the third quarter caused by the impact of supply chain disruptions and inflationary labor, transportation, and commodity costs. PEP anticipates increasing input cost inflation for the remainder of 2022. Unfavorable exchange rates also remain a headwind.

shares of Texas Instruments are down -0.2% over the past year versus a -9.0% decline in Zacks Semiconductor – General Industry. The company faces analog sluggishness, which remains a concern. Additionally, slowing momentum in the personal electronics and industrial end markets is negative. In addition, pandemic-related supply chain disruptions and the introduction of new export regulations are headwinds.

However, Texas Instruments’ fourth-quarter results were driven by solid momentum across its embedded processing segment. Growing demand for embedded technologies in the automotive and industrial markets made a good contribution.

In addition, the continued recovery of the automotive market provided tailwind. We note that the company’s growing investments in new growth avenues and competitive advantages remain tailwinds. In addition, the portfolio of durable products and efficient manufacturing strategies are further plus points.

HSBC holdings Equities have outperformed Zacks Banks – Overseas Industrials (+15.0% vs. +1.0%) over the past year. The company’s strong capital position, digital capability initiatives, extensive network and improving operational efficiencies through corporate restructuring are likely to continue to support HSBC’s growth.

The bank has reached an agreement to sell its banking operations in Canada. Exiting retail banking in the US and France is expected to help it focus more on Asia. At the same time, the acquisition of AXA Singapore’s insurance assets will expand HSBC’s business in the region.

While efforts to improve market share in the UK and China will support financials, they could result in rising costs that will weigh on profits. Nonetheless, HSBC’s product and service leadership in cross-border banking is helping to expand its customer base.
